As it ramps up its effort to build a fleet of driverless taxis, Google's Waymo says it will open its first ride-hailing center next week.
The company says it plans to open the center in Phoenix and, in a bid to lure passengers, will provide free rides for the first year. The pilot program will include over 400 rides available via a smartphone app.
The news marks a major milestone for the self-driving car industry, as Google joins Uber and Lyft as the two major players in the driverless ride-hailing business. Waymo says it has already done 20,000 automated rides in Phoenix, about half with passengers riding in fully driverless vehicles.

Ken Jennings, the man who has won 74 “Jeopardy!” games in a row, is no longer a winner.
The show’s host, Alex Trebek, confirmed Jennings’ defeat in the two-part “Jeopardy!” Tournament of Champions on Thursday, when Jennings’ final answer was deemed incorrect. He held the record for 74 consecutive victories until Craig Masback came from behind to defeat him last week in the semifinals.
